Artist Biography

Born in Thailand, Lea Belon is an NYC based cross disciplinary artist of Chilean-Spanish descent. She received a BFA in Fashion Design from Parsons School of Design.

She believes that artists don’t express themselves like how other ordinary people do, they create through the way of exploring social and environmental resources and refine it with their own concept of reality. How they think makes everything seem connected, relating fantasy with reality and realising that fashion can be more than just a style or a trend, but a manner of understanding the essence of concoction.

Since the debut of ‘Atemporal’, Lea has continued to experiment with creative expressions beyond fashion. Currently, she is a freelancer and doing independent research on sustainability in mundane life.

Artist Statement

‘ATEMPORAL’ is a timeless collection of my personal journey; transcending gender, seasons, and forms. A Spanish word that means unseasonal, nothing is yet resolved. It’s a timeless capsule that transports the wearer to a timeless reality.

Living in 10 cities has affected me personally and I realised how during the years I started collecting objects to keep memories intact. The collection is based on the relation between myself and the environment I am surrounded in and how I like to change the perspectives of things. The ruching technique is a big motif in my collection as it portrays how you can let go and unite ideas, people, objects, and memories.

I got greatly influenced by the studies of cartography and topography by examining maps. The patterns have been created mainly using as inspiration the silhouettes of the shapes and collages I’ve made from 3D experimentations, taking apart and combining different pieces. The fabric of a garment is the first thing I notice. It is an important factor that makes the decision to get the product. Therefore, I consciously chose fabrics by mainly selecting sustainable and natural materials. The purpose is to help society by giving her contribution to make a difference in the creative field.

The foundation of my work operates on the premise that reality (or an imagined reality) can be modelled in ways that communicate spatial information. While also incorporating sustainability within the designs and patterns.

A dreamlike world where my collection represents thoughts that are kept hidden between the garments.
